Christina Hsieh
Founder - Matter
Drawing on more than 20 years’ experience, Christina is a dedicated and focused structural engineer. She established Matter in 2017 with the aim of giving back to the community and promoting structural engineering excellence in an open, approachable way.
Christina’s expertise lies in using timber, reinforced concrete, steel, and masonry, and providing creative structural solutions to meet clients’ aspirations on projects with architectural challenges. With a passion for art, architecture, and sustainable design, she has worked alongside prestigious architects such as Foster + Partners, RPBW Architects, and Squire & Partners.
Christina’s love for structural engineering began when she was growing up in Taiwan. She was inspired after hearing about the Sydney Opera House in Australia and decided that she would like to work for Arup, the British firm that built it. At that time, engineering was viewed as an unsuitable career for a woman. However, Christina’s determination and hard work paid off; she overcame cultural, language, and financial barriers to study in the UK and, ultimately, secure a job with Arup.
Her career went on to include senior positions at other respected engineering consultancies such as Buro Happold, AKT II, Expedition Engineering, and Conisbee.
As a strong advocate for diversity in engineering, Christina believes the presence of women in the field is crucial for fostering innovation and broadening perspectives. She is passionate about encouraging young women to pursue careers in engineering, emphasizing that diverse teams are more creative and better equipped to solve complex problems.
Christina is a Fellow of IET and member of Structural Engineers (IStructE), where she also volunteers as a chartership interviewer, and takes part in the Applications and Professional Review Panel and Small Practitioners Panel.
